Salmon Point Lighthouse

History of the Salmon Point Lighthouse

Built in 1871 to mark an area of shoals just offshore. The lighthouse had a relatively short life - about 60 years. It wasn't one of the tallest on the lake, standing only a mere 35 feet tall, but it just might have been one of the most important. Reason being? Mariners had nicknamed this point "Wicked Point" being that it was such a navigational nightmare when they rounded the western edge of Quinte Isle.

Note: I would like to extend a special thank you to the owner of the private campground that the lighthouse sits on. She almost didn't let me in to view the light being that it was rented out and she was afraid that I would spend hours there photographing the light. (Make the renters feel awkward.) After a little pleading, I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. The pictures I did get are wonderful.

Directions: The lighthouse sits on the grounds of a privately owned campground. From Cherry Valley, follow Route 18 to Salmon Point Road. Follow Salmon Point Road all the way to the campground entrance. You will have to ask for permission to enter and take pictures.
