This lighthouse is relatively short at a mere 46 feet. It plays an important role in mariner navigation. It guides ships into Honolulu coming from the Western United States. It still retains its original lens, which is not a Fresnel lens, but a different type of lens called a Hyper-Radiant. It is so bright that its 115,000 candlepower lamp can be spotted 28 miles out to sea.
Directions: The lighthouse sits on the island of Ohau. From Interstate H1 heading south, follow Kalanianaole Highway (SR72) east past Hanauma Bay State Park and Sandy Beach Park. You will be looking for Hawaii Kai Golf Course. About 1/2 mile past the golf course on the right is a gate blocking the trail entrance. You will have to hike the rest of the way to the lighthouse viewing point.
