This lighthouse is actually two lighthouses. The inner most light is a typical lighthouse - cylinder shaped. The outer most light is a wood framed building cladded in steel to protect it from the lake. One neat feature this light has is a big "v-shaped plow" attached to the front of the building. This serves to "split" the waves crashing against it and fan them to the side. The outer most building also houses a fog horn.
Directions: From US-31 in Grand Haven, make a left onto Jackson Street and follow that to the end. It changes to South Water Street. At the end of that, the road will change to South Harbor Drive. This will lead to Grand Haven State Park and the lighthouse.
To view the lighthouse from across the channel: From US-31 heading north out of Grand Haven, get off at 3rd Street. This will change to 174th Ave (Grand Haven Road). Follow this north and then make a left onto North Shore Drive. Once at the end, North Shore Drive makes a cut off to the right. (THIS ISN'T THE CORRECT WAY) continue to follow it to the left. Once at the end, you will be able to see the Grand Haven Lighthouses across the channel.
