History of the San Luis Obispo Lighthouse

San Luis Obispo lighthouse marks the San Luis Obispo Bay. At one time it housed a fourth-order Fresnel Lens. The lighthouse was automated in 1974, and less than two years later, it was replaced with a light on a steel pole. The original Fresnel lens is now at the San Luis Obispo Historic Museum in town. Rumor has it that this lighthouse will be turned into a bed and breakfast.

Directions: From Highway 1 / 101 north of Pismo Beach, look for Avila Beach Drive. Follow this west for about 4 miles to Diablo Canyon Road. Once on Diablo Canyon Road, it will be only a short distance to Lighthouse Road. Follow Lighthouse Road 1.6 miles to the end.
