Hooper Straight Lighthouse

History of the Hooper Straight Lighthouse

One of the last few remaining screwpile lighthouses of the Chesapeake Bay. The original lighthouse was destroyed by a huge ice flow. A few pieces were preserved, and carried over to this current one.

This light served its duty for about 75 years until it was decommissioned in '54. It was moved to its current location on the Eastern Banks of Bay in Maryland, where it is part of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. These pictures was taken by Norm Burtness during the wooden boat show in '98.

Directions: From Easton, Maryland, take Route 33 (St. Michaels Road) west to St. Michaels. Note: The street name will change to Talbot Street as you get closer to St. Michaels. Once in St. Michaels, make a right onto Mill Street, and follow that to the end.
