History of the Biloxi Lighthouse

The lighthouse was originally built off site, and brought in on brig. The iron pieces were put together, and the the tower was lined with locally made brick. It was illuminated with a fourth order Fresnel lens.

Since it was built on a sand bluff and suffered a period of neglect, the tower once leaned 2 feet towards the Mississippi sound. It was corrected, and continues to stand today. It is painted white to stand out against the green pine woods. One unique point regarding this lighthouse was that for most of its existance, it was tended by females.

Directions: Take I-110 south to the end. It will end at US-90. Head west on US-90. The lighthouse sits in the median less than a half-mile up the road.
