The tower stands 68 feet tall and has long since been decommissioned. This is where range lights were invented. The son of a keeper came up with the idea of hoisting two lanterns up high, thus allowing ship captains to line up the lights and when they see a single light, they are heading straight into the channel.
Directions: The lighthouse sits on private property of DOW Chemical Company. The best view is from the opposite side of the river. From SR-25 in Bay City, make a left onto Scheurmann Road and follow it to Woodside Ave. Make a right and then follow Woodside Ave to Pine Road. Make a left onto Pine Road and follow that to the Coast Guard Station. If you look across, you will see the Saginaw River Rear Range Lighthouse.
