The Rock of Ages Lighthouse sits about 2.5 miles off the coast of Isle Royale. The lighthouse is made of steel, comprised of seven levels, and stands 117 feet tall. It originally housed a second order Fresnel lens which was visible for about 30 miles, but was later replaced by a more modern solar powered 300mm lens. The Fresnel lens is on display in the Windigo Ranger Station on Isle Royale.
One interesting bit of history, during heavy fog, the George M. Cox ran aground near the Rock of Ages light. All 125 passengers had to spend the night in the lighthouse. Many slept on the spiral stairs, or wherever there was room, until a Coast Guard came out the next day to transport them.
