History of the Point Pinos Lighthouse

Located south of San Francisco, the West Coast's oldest standing lighthouse, Point Pinos, marks the entrance of Monterey Bay. The first keeper of the lighthouse was Charles Layton at a yearly salary of $1,000. He was killed several months after taking the job, so his wife took over duties tending to the lighthouse and was appointed keeper.

Directions: Exit off of Highway 1 at Route 68 (Holman Ave). Follow this for about 3 miles. After Platt Park, the road will change names to Forest Ave. Follow Forest Ave several blocks to Lighthouse Ave. Make a left onto Lighthouse Ave, and follow that for a little over a mile to Asilomar Ave. Make a right onto Asilomar Ave. The lighthouse will be up several blocks on your left.
