The first lightstation at Plum Island was built in the late 1780s and served a number of years before being destoryed. Several more towers would be constructed, moved, and decommissioned before the final one in 1898.

The light originally burned kerosene before switching to electricity in 1927. The lighthouse was automated in 1951. The lighthouse is now maintened by the Friends of Plum Island Light.

Directions: From US-1 in Newburyport, head east on Merrimac Street. This will change names several times. The first time, it will change to Water Street, and then to Plum Island Turnpike. Follow these streets 3.8 miles to the end. You will then head north on Northern Blvd and follow it to the end. It will be about 1.4 miles. At the end, you will see the Plum Island Light.
