History of the Point Aux Barques Lighthouse

The tower stands 89 feet tall and houses a shipwreck museum in the keeper's quarters. The quarters is open to visitors from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Although not officially open when we visited, a worker gladly opened the building and allowed us to visit the museum. The tower, however, is not open for climbing as the light is still active.

The area just to the right of the lighthouse is a park with full camping facilities. According to one book, you may be "visited" by a pleasant ghost of a young lady that "lives" at the light. True? Don't know, but you could always camp the night and find out. Point Aux Barques means Point of the boats.

Directions: From SR-25 (Grindstone Road) east out of Huron City for about 2.5 miles to Lighthouse Drive. Follow that back north to the lighthouse.
