Old Mission Lighthouse

Traverse City, Michigan - 1870

Lighthouse Picture

The Old Mission Lighthouse was contributed by Dennis Kent. Dennis had this to say about the light:

Here in my "backyard" is a light that warns of a peninsula jutting into Grand Traverse Bay and splitting it into East and West Bays. It has been replaced by an automated light that now sits off shore. The light is now a private residence surrounded by State Park land. It sits on the 45th parallel, half way between the equator and the North pole.

Note: The lighthouse itself is on private property. However, as Dennis stated above, the land around it is a park. Please respect the owner's privacy and do not trespass beyond the fence or bother the owners. There are signs all around the property showing where you can go and where to avoid.

Directions: From Traverse City, make a left onto Peninsula Drive (SR-37) and follow that all the way to the end. At the end, we found the Old Mission Lighthouse. Please pay attention to the areas that are private property, and do not cross them.
