Selkirk Lighthouse

Pulaski, New York - 1838

Lighthouse Picture

The Selkirk Lighthouse sits at the mouth of the Salmon River. Notice the lantern room at the top of the "house", it predates lantern rooms that can house a modern Fresnel lens. This is very rare and only three other lighthouses like this exist in the U.S. Of all of them, only two of them are serviceable. This one, and another.

A lighthouse was initially built here in hopes of future growth of "Port Ontario." Everything was all planned to build this port, but several things happened to divert this. First, a railway was built further inland through Pulaski, and second, the Erie Canal spurred into the Oswego River less than 20 miles to the west.
